Her Majesty In The Holy Land

Renowned British actress Helen Mirren arrived in Israel on Sunday to prepare for her role in a new Hollywood remake of the Israeli movie “The Debt,” in which she will portray a former Mossad agent sent to hunt down a Nazi officer.

Mirren, whose acclaimed performance in ‘The Queen’ won her the 2007 Academy Award for Best Actress, has already started taking Hebrew lessons and studying the history of the Mossad as part of the preparations for the part.

The original movie, created by Ido Rosenblum and Assaf Bernstein, tells the story of three Mossad agents who fail in their mission to capture a Nazi war criminal and bring him to justice in Israel.

The English version, which is being produced by Miramax, recently began filming in Israel, Britain and Germany.

Mirren will be staying in Israel for a week. Shortly after landing in the country she reportedly told her friends that she was “in love” with Israel and was even considering buying a summer house in Tel Aviv.

Dench and Mirren In Theatre Power List

HTML clipboardVeteran actresses Dame Judi Dench and Dame Helen Mirren are among a host of stars named as the most powerful women in theatre.

The two are joined by Rachel Weisz, Rosamund Pike and Gillian Anderson in the prestigious poll, compiled by magazine Harper’s Bazaar.

Among those recognised includes playwrights, leading impresarios and rising stars of the British stage.

Harper’s Bazaar editor Lucy Yeomans says, “The 20 women on our list represent the diversity and brilliance found in this creative industry. As well as including actresses, our list also takes account of the incredible powerhouses who make the productions happen.”

The X-Files actress Anderson, who is to appear in an upcoming production of Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House at the Donmar Warehouse in London, is billed as an “honorary Brit” on the list.

She says, “I have wanted to work on the British stage for most of my life. The opportunity to turn that lingering dream into a reality is the greatest reward. The challenge is to chase that opportunity, despite an equally passionate fear.”
