Golden Globes: British Actresses Dominate Nominations

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Three British actresses will go head-to-head for the best actress in a drama prize after being nominated at this year’s Golden Globes.

Dame Helen Mirren, Emily Blunt and Carey Mulligan join Americans Sandra Bullock and Gabourey Sibide for the coveted best actress category in what is Hollywood’s second-biggest film awards after the Oscars.

Muligan and Blunt both received nods for roles in very British productions, the former for the coming-of-age story An Education, set in 1960s London and the latter for period drama The Young Victoria. Mirren was nominated for her role in the Leo Tolstoy biopic The Last Station.

There was further British success as Colin Firth was given a nod in the male category.

Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes received one nod, for Robert Downey Jr for his take as the Baker Street sleuth.

In the small screen section, Churchill biopic Into The Storm was nominated in the best mini-series or made-for-TV film section, as was the BBC’s Little Dorrit.

Irish actor Brendan Gleeson was named a contender for best actor in a TV mini-series, taking his place alongside Kenneth Branagh and Jeremy Irons among others.

Hugh Laurie was given a nod in the best actor in a TV drama section.

The winners of the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced during a glitzy ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on January 17. The event will be hosted by British comedian Ricky Gervais.
